Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg - The Only Cathedral in the Duchy!

8/6/2014

Picture
One of the benefits of arriving in a European city during a religious holiday, as we did when we chose to visit Luxembourg City during the long Ascension Day holiday weekend, is that the churches are filled with song and ceremony.

As we walked into the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Luxembourg, our spirits were lifted by the beautiful voices wafting out across the nave toward us from the cathedral choir.  As we drew closer to listen, the tall jewel colored glass of the gothic-framed stained-glass windows in the apse glowed and the sparking gold leaf on the altar and the radiant alabaster of the carved reredos screen rose up to meet the tall windows.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral was originally built between 1613 and 1621 as a Jesuit Church to serve the college founded a few years earlier in Luxembourg (at that time the Spanish Netherlands).

Artistically, it was particularly the German sculptor Daniel Muller (d. 1623) from Freiberg (Saxony) who contributed to the appearance of the church which is primarily in the late Gothic and Dutch Renaissance style with some Pre-Baroque elements.   His work includes the organ gallery.

Picture
In 1773, the Jesuits left the city, so shortly after that, in 1778 Empress Maria Theres of Austria gifted the church to the City of Luxembourg.  At the end of the 18th century, the church received the statue of the Maria Consolatrix  Afflictorum (Consoler of the Afflicted), the patron saint of both the city and the nation and on the day we were there, looked down from the high altar in the apse.

1870, the church was elevated by Pope Pius IX to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame.  It is the only Cathedral in Luxembourg.

T
he crypt of the Cathedral contains the remains of members of the Grand-Ducal family, but the one that caught both my eye and imagination was the tomb of John of Bohemia, also called “John the Blind” (1296 – 1346).

He was both King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg and was the eldest son of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII and his wife Margaret of Brabant.  He is well known for his bravery having died while fighting in the Battle of Crecy, which was the first battle of the Hundred Years War.  He insisted upon fighting even though he had been blind for a decade.

Picture
From 1935 to 1938 the Cathedral was enlarged and expanded.  The goal was to harmoniously integrate the Gothic church with the surrounding 17th and 18th century buildings, as well as the old residential houses.  The beautiful stained glass windows are said to be from the 19th and twentieth century restorations.

From my point of view, they did a fantastic job, because the exterior of the cathedral complex is a harmonious and beautiful space.  The Notre-Dame Cathedral of Luxembourg, full of history and beauty is one of the gems of Luxembourg City.

Luxembourg City's Ancient Defenses - The Bock - Casemates

7/21/2014

Picture
I have to admit, before I visited Luxembourg, I had never heard of the “Bock” or the “Casemates” and I really wasn’t sure what to expect, but Alan, our hotel concierge at Parc Beaux Arts, (see our review!) highly suggested it, so we headed out wondering what we were going to experience.  As we descended into the extensive web of caves, I immediately began to realize that the Bock and the Casemates had been a powerful fortress protecting the city of Luxembourg throughout the centuries.

Picture
Picture
Picture

The “Bock” is a promontory in the north-eastern corner of Luxembourg City’s old historical district. Archaeological evidence shows that this natural defensive area was probably used as early as antiquity and early medieval times by the Romans and Franks.

As a natural fortification, its rocky cliffs tower above the River Alzette and for this reason, Count Sigefroy, decided to purchase the Bock and build his castle and fortress defenses upon it in 963.  In this way he could provide protection for his properties.  There was probably some sort of castle structure on-site before he built, but there remains no confirmed physical trace of that earlier structure.

Picture
The town that grew up near the castle and its defenses became the city of Luxembourg.  Luxembourg’s castle and defenses were attacked, rebuilt and reinforced many times as the armies of the Burgundians, Habsburgs, Spaniards, Prussians and French vied for victory over this strategic part of Europe, and its stronghold.

Picture
Picture
The first tunnels for the underground defenses below the old castle were dug out during the Spanish period in 1644. Extensions were made by the French engineer Vauban under King Louis XIV in 1684.  From 1737 to 1746 the Austrians finally completed the extraordinary complex of underground passages.

The defensive caves accommodated 50 cannons and a garrison of 1,200 men.  In addition, they had underground facilities for housing equipment and horses as well as workshops, kitchens, bakeries and slaughterhouses.  These impressive facilities allowed the city defenders to hold out against the French for seven months during the French Revolution, gaining the Casemates the prestigious title of “best in the world apart from Gibraltar”

The Treaty of London signed in 1867, finally ended hundreds of years of wars for rule over the strategically important Duchy of Luxembourg.  The defenses were destroyed as demanded by the treaty.  The vestiges of the Count’s Castle are on display in the archeological crypt of the Casemates.

Picture
Picture
The actual Casemate fortress cave system itself was impossible to completely demolish due to the number of cave tunnels that are actually underneath parts of the city itself, so access to many of the tunnels was simply blocked and left for later generations to re-open and explore.

In more recent times, the Casemates again proved their worth during WWII, when they were used as a bomb shelter for up 35,000 people.  Since 1933, the Casemates have been open to the public and in 1994, the caves became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As you wander through the dark, rock-hewn passages and peer out through the cannon holes and round cave openings with views across the valley far below, you can imagine soldiers perched beside their cannons warily watching from the same openings during those long ago wars and siege days.

The Bock and Casemates are definitely a "must see" when you visit
Luxemburg City!

Chateau de Bourscheid - Imagining Castle Life in a Beautiful Ruin

7/17/2014

Comments

Picture
Sometimes a castle is just a ruin and it takes quite a bit of imagination to picture what it might have looked like when it was a huge stronghold and residence for a feudal age family.

This was the case when we visited Bourscheid Castle, which sits perched far above the town of Bourscheid and the river Sure, on an isolated rocky promontory accessible only from a narrow road on the northwest side of the ancient stone fortress-home.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
The castle grew from its humble beginnings from about the year 1000, when a stone fortress replaced an older wooden stronghold.  Excavations show that the site was occupied as early as Roman times, and the fortress/castle was occupied throughout the Ottonian, Carolingian, Merovingian, dynasties.

Building continued to expand outward from its center over the centuries as a Keep was built and later a palace and buildings to serve the castle such as the, chapel, dungeons and a warden’s house were also constructed.  The some service rooms such as the bake-house were actually hewn from solid rock.

This small castle community was protected by a circular wall with at least four towers.
Only one of those towers remains today.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
A thick stone wall with 8 towers was completed in 1384 to further protect the castle and as the Bourscheid family grew, a great house (the Stozemburger house) was built in the lower castle area and the palace was extended in height.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Sometime after 1477, as added protection, a gate with a defensive ditch and 4 towers were constructed and the square front of the gate was protected by palisades.

These fortifications protected the Bourscheid family until 1512, when the last member of the family died and the castle began to deteriorate.

Picture
Picture
The upper castle grounds (and probably the stones too!) were re-used for two homes, as the upper castle was transformed into two dwellings arranged on both sides of the “palace”. One was already deserted by 1626; the other was never permanently inhabited.

The chapel was enlarged around 1650 so that it could boast two altars and the Stozemburger House was occupied as a residence by bailiffs.  The invasion of Luxembourg by French revolutionary troops in 1704-1705 put an end to feudalism, but the structures continued to be used by the community until 1812.

Picture
Picture
While the Stozemburger house has been restored (and feels a little  "new" and too much like a museum/school program space for my taste) and the watchtowers have been brought back to fairy-tale beauty, the ruins are mostly left for your imagination to rebuild in your mind.

Picture
Picture
The audio-tour is excellent and really helps bring the stones to life for you.  I would HIGHLY recommend that you take the audio tour.  Exploring Bourscheid Castle, this ruined but still beautiful skeleton of a castle was a lovely end to our day discovering the north of Luxembourg!

Chateau Vianden - A Fairy-Tale Hilltop Castle

7/14/2014

Comments

Picture
Chateau de Vianden, perched majestically on a peak over the town of Vianden in the north of Luxembourg, is exactly what you would picture when you imagine a fairy-tale castle.  Its graceful pointed turrets, steep gabled roof and stern grey stone walls create a magical view.

Picture
The steep promontory where the chateau sits has always been used for strategic purposes from its very beginnings, when during Roman times, a fortress/watch tower and signal station called a “Castellum” resided.
Picture
It is believed that basement ruins found during restoration show that during or shortly after the 9th century, the high protected hill provided refuge for some of the last members of the Carolingian Empire.
Picture
Picture
The first “Count of Vianden” is mentioned in historical records in 1090 and the castle was the seat of the Counts of Vianden until the beginning of the 15th century.  The counts of Vianden were the mightiest lords of the area bordered by the rivers Rhine, Mosel and Maas from the 12th to 15th centuries, and had close connections to the Royal Family of France and the German imperial court.

Picture
Henry I of Vianden (1220-1250), known as 'the Sun Count', brought the holdings, lifestyle and influence of the House of Vianden to its height of power and the family remained influential for hundreds of years.

So as you can imagine, this impressive family built a great castle which they increased in size and remodeled over the centuries. It is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal castles of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe.

Picture
Picture
As you approach the castle, you will enter into the courtyard via a path along the heavily fortified wall and through five gates, the first of which would have had a drawbridge.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Around 1100, a square keep was built as well as a kitchen, a chapel and residential rooms worthy of an aristocratic family.

Picture

Picture

Excavations at the castle yielded medieval archeological layers from the 9th, 11th and 12th century pointing to an oval Carolingian construction.  An exhibition of historical artifacts and archeological finds from the castle during the middle ages were discovered during the excavations.

Picture
Picture
Picture
During the first half of the 12th century, a new residential tower and a prestigious decagonal chapel were added while the palace itself was expanded. The Chapel is a double oratory chapel, consisting of two separate floor-levels, with an opening rising in the middle .

Picture
The lower floor was meant for the commoners of the town and the servants. They could hear and follow the religious ceremonies in the upper section of the church through the six-sided opening, but they could not access any other part of the palace from the chapel and were out of the site of the Count and his family.  The Chapel became the first Parish Church in the town of Vianden.

At the beginning of the 13th century, a new two-story palace was built with a sumptuous gallery connecting the palace to the chapel. The last great change to the castle took place in the middle of the 13th century when the entire castle was remodeled in the Gothic style.

Finally, in 1621 Prince Maurice of Orange-Nassau-Vianden designed the banqueting hall and bedroom, replacing a damaged wing of the 11th century keep. The beautiful fireplace is from 1450.

The castle passed for the most part, out of the Vianden dynasty hands in the 16th century and fell into ruin over centuries.  Restoration of Chateau Vianden was carefully begun in 1962. The Family of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg transferred it to state ownership in 1977 and it has now been restored to its former glory.

As you wander through this beautiful old castle, Chateau Vianden you feel enveloped by the presence of the grand historical days of this part of Luxembourg and exploring the rooms is a delight for anyone who loves learning more about Europe’s past.

Driving Through Luxembourg's Little Switzerland

7/12/2014

Picture
Most travelers are confronted with the problem of  “what should I do if I am traveling on a national holiday where the whole country seems to be closed?”   Well, here was our choice (and now our recommendation!) if you are traveling in Luxembourg.

Little Switzerland or “Petite Suisse” in the Duchy of Luxembourg, is one of the region’s most beautiful and recreational areas.  We decided to make the scenic drive from Echternach to Beaufort on the national religious holiday of Ascension Day, since almost everything was closed in the Luxembourg City.

National holidays are popular for outdoor activities throughout Europe, and the area called Little Switzerland was no exception.  Everyone was out enjoying the beautiful weather and the stunning natural environment.

The “Little Switzerland” is part of the Germano-Luxembourg Nature Park and has steep, twisting valleys and deep green woodlands filled with cool bubbling streams and dramatic rock formations.  While we didn’t climb any of the amazing rock towers or hike through the winding gulleys, we did enjoy a leisurely drive through the beautiful region.  The drive is 35 km (22 miles) long and can take anywhere from a half-day to a full day, depending upon how many stops for hiking or eating you decide to make.

Picture
The drive starts in Echternach, the capital of Little Switzerland.  It is also the Duchy of Luxembourg’s oldest town, founded in 698.

Picture
The Little Switzerland drive winds along the Ernze Noire valley, via Mullerthal to Berdorf which is known for a center for hiking and rock-climbing.  The road passes by strange rock formations such as the “Predigstuhl”, and through the “Werschrumschluff” rock crevices which are just wide enough for a hiker to pass through.  The drive ends at Beaufort, where you can find 12th – 16th century castle ruins and the local liquor called Cassero.
We hope you enjoy watching our “real” drive through the “Petite Suisse” and I’m thinking you’ll find our candid comments, arguments and exclamations typical of most couples traveling together amusing.  We all know what traveling with your “significant other” is like!

A Drive Through Luxembourg's Mosel Valley

6/30/2014

Comments

Picture
If you are spending any time in Luxembourg, you shouldn’t miss a drive through the Mosel Valley.  Germany’s Mosel Valley is very well known, but the Luxembourg side is still a lovely secret and Jim and couldn’t wait to explore it!

The Mosel Valley is a region in north-eastern France, south-western Germany, and eastern Luxembourg, centered on the river valley formed by the Mosel (Moselle) river.  The river Mosel forms a natural boundary with Germany, and Luxembourg's part of the valley spreads through the central and eastern parts of the cantons of Grevenmacher and Remich where we started our drive.

Luxembourg’s Mosel Valley
is famous for its medieval towns, steep hillsides full of vineyards and picturesque wineries where the famous Luxembourg wines, mostly white varieties such as Riesling, Auxerrois and Pinot Gris are created.

Luxembourg wineries mainly produce dry, varietal white and sparkling wines (about 15% of total production). This is a quite a contrast to the German side of the Mosel which has a strong tradition in semi-dry and sweet wine production.

The Luxembourg Mosel region is an artisan wine producer, where the winery sector is dominated by small family enterprises, with very few large, corporate-wine industrialists and most producers don’t have their own wineries.  Most vintners are members of village wine co-operatives.  Whether small or large, the hillsides filled with vines sloping down to the Mosel were enchanting.

The drive turned out to be a little more challenging than we anticipated due to road construction detours, but with the help of our “TomTom” GPS and a few spirited arguments about where we should turn, Jim and I found our way through some of the most beautiful countryside in Europe.  (Have a laugh while you watch our video below!)

We argued about which “waypoint” to put in at any point and what town we were actually in! Anyone traveling with your "honey" will relate this this! And I couldn't quit exclaiming about how beautiful everything was!  Sound familiar?

We vowed right then to come back to the Luxembourg Mosel, to stay in one of the charming hotels dotting this valley and taste more of these little known, but lovely wines!

Parc Beaux-Arts Hotel - A Historic Beauty with Modern Luxury

6/20/2014

Comments

Picture
The Parc Beaux-Arts Hotel in Luxembourg is another lovely, small boutique hotel that met our Fab-Hotel criteria.  The hotel is part of the Goeres Group Luxembourg.

We chose the small and charming Parc Beaux-Arts Hotel because it is situated in the heart of the old town in Luxembourg City, and the hotel is a beautifully and artistically restored historic residence where the architectural remains have been skillfully incorporated into each of its nine Suites and two Deluxe Suites.

Picture
The hotel is conveniently located within a minute or two walk to one of the historic market squares, the Place d’Armes, and only a few more minutes walking to the city’s largest square, the Place Guillaume II, both of which are filled with restaurants and cafes.  The hotel is also perfectly located for sightseeing. The Grand Ducal Palace, the Casemates and Cathedral Notre-Dame, are just a few of the amazing and historic places nearby.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is very small.  In fact, the whole country is only 80 km (50 miles) from its north to south border.  While Luxembourg has only been a sovereign nation since the 1830's, its history is far older.

It was settled by the Romans in 54 BC and fought over by European empires for centuries.
The ancient lands now called France, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria took their turns ruling over or trying to conquer Luxembourg, giving it its unique and wonderful flavor and the historical and cultural sites of the city tell the tale of the tiny but powerful country.

Upon our arrival, we were able to park temporarily just outside the hotel, and as we checked in, the wonderfully welcoming host Alan, concierge, day manager (and actually wearer of many hats depending upon what is needed!), called a parking attendant to valet our car in the hotel’s parking lot.  If you are driving, this particular convenience was wonderful.  As you may know, parking in historic cities can be a nightmare!  When we needed the car again the next day for a day tour of the Luxembourg countryside, it was promptly delivered back to the front of the hotel and we made an easy exit from the city.

Speaking of Alan, we were very impressed with his knowledge of the history and art of Luxembourg as he personally mapped out a walking tour for us and made suggestions for seeing the city sights and we appreciated his friendly attention during our entire stay.   In fact, everyone on the staff was wonderful to us and even provided an electric fan for our room when we requested one.

Picture
Picture
Picture
We had booked one of the two Deluxe Suites for our stay, and were delighted to find it was decorated in a modern artistic style with original artwork, while still retaining the overall historic feel throughout the rest of the hotel.  Jim and I particularly like suites, because we can stow suitcases and clothes and jackets in the bedroom, leaving the lounge area as a tidy and restful sitting area.  It’s a nice space to have available after a long day of sightseeing!

Picture
Picture
The bed was super comfortable with crisp white sheets, and the bathroom was sparkling clean with a high window that let in lots of bright morning light.  Jim and I have a pet peeve about dim bathrooms, so we loved this light-filled room.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Breakfast was not included, but we decided to eat at the hotel for convenience and were impressed with the fresh meats and cheese, yogurt and array of breads and rolls.  We decided to try their omelets made with local ham and cheese and they were delicious!  We enjoyed our breakfast in the pretty bar area which was made up as a cozy breakfast room in the mornings.

Picture
Picture
We stopped back to have a last late night champagne in this stylish hotel bar before heading to bed, and the artistic décor, now lit for evening was just the relaxing ambiance we needed to end our busy day!

The only caveat to this wonderful hotel was the street noise we could hear in our room in the evening due to the holiday revelers at the bars along the street, but a little bit of street noise is the price for being in the historic center and in our case, for arriving the day before a national holiday (Ascension Day).  Everyone was celebrating!

So bring your ear-plugs if you plan to go to bed early on a holiday weekend, but our recommendation would be to enjoy your evening out at the wonderful restaurants and bars or sitting outside at a cafe table while listening to the bands that play in the gazebo on the square, and go to bed a little later.  It is your vacation after all!  Do some partying!

In our opinion, Parc Beaux-Arts is a warm welcoming hotel where you can enjoy staying in a charming, historic residence designed with beautiful modern décor and staffed with friendly helpful people.  We couldn’t recommend it more highly!

***  The Goeres Group has a total of five beautiful hotels, four of which are located in Luxembourg City and one in the town of Schengen, and each hotel provides a unique experience catering to your business or vacation preferences.

Head of Sales Stephanie Schmidt was kind enough to meet with us during our stay, and explained how each hotel was designed to provide a unique and specialized experience whether traveling for business or pleasure.  The five hotels range from executive class and business conference hotels, to charming and economical hotels and of course, the Parc Beaux-Arts which is exclusive, artistic and historic.
