The Huntington - Museum and Gardens of My Heart

There are places that are special to each of us.  Places that are rooted deep in our hearts and remain brilliant in our minds over the years.  Places that delight us every time we go back.

For me, this place is The Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens.  First visited as a fifteen-year-old teenager, when entry was still free and to which I have returned many times over the decades since.

The Huntington was founded in 1919 by Henry E. Huntington, an immensely successful businessman who built a financial empire including railroad companies, utilities, and real estate holdings in Southern California.

After amassing his fantastic wealth, Henry Huntington wanted to establish a legacy in the style of the great philanthropists of the East Coast such as the institutions established by Henry Clay Frick and J. Pierpont Morgan, whose fine collections were made available for scholars and displayed to the general public.

Picture
But Henry’s dream was to be based in his beloved West Coast.  From the time of his first visit to the San Gabriel Valley in the 1890’s, he expressed his delight in the area saying, “All that was necessary to capture me was my first visit to, and study of, Southern California.” He later wrote, “You come here and you are conquered….”

Regarding his belief in his ambition to build his great library, gallery and botanical garden, he is quoted as stating “The Huntington Library is not for a day only.  If we envision the future, I believe the Pacific Coast will one day be the center of culture extending around the world.”  His words turned out to be greatly prophetic.

The heart of the Huntington galleries, library and gardens is the grand Beaux Arts mansion built by Henry and his wife Arabella as their place to “settle down”.  It was nicknamed “Huntington’s Palace”.

Construction began in 1909 using local architects Myron Hunt and Elmer Grey and was designed using an eclectic combination of Roman, Renaissance and Baroque elements.  They also built a number of outbuildings such as a garage (now used as the Boone Gallery) and a bowling alley/billiards room (now used as the Rose Garden Tea Room).

Arabella loved eighteenth century French décor and added her great influence to the interior design and furnishing of the home, but Henry also had firm influence as he directed that the interior walls be white except for the mahogany library and demanded that the home be “fire-proof” and have, “plenty of light”.   Walking through the light-filled mansion, you can easily imagine the elegant privileged life lived in the fabulously decorated rooms.

In 1910, Henry began to focus his energy on collecting.  Over the following decades, he purchased rare books, manuscripts and artwork, trying to measure up to the great libraries and galleries of Britain and Europe.  Among the treasures in the collection are the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, a Gutenberg Bible on vellum, and a world-class collection of the early editions of Shakespeare’s.

In 1919 he commissioned Hunt and Grey to construct a great library building on his estate.

With Arabella (already a respected art collector herself and collector of many of the Renaissance pieces) guiding him, Henry also invested heavily in art and after the devastation of WWI, when aristocratic British and Europeans needed to sell their artwork to survive, he was able to purchase a number of great paintings, sculptures and decorative arts.

The European collection spans the 15th through the 20th centuries.  After Arabella’s death, Henry expanded the eighteenth-century French collection in her honor.

The estate acres, which were originally cultivated with crops such as citrus, peaches and nuts and avocados, were planted with gardens under the direction of landscape architect William Hertrich.  The gardens that date back to Huntington’s time at the estate include the North Vista Lawn, Camellia Collection, Desert Garden, Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, Lily Ponds and Palm Garden.

Unfortunately, our latest visit was in January and the Rose Garden was for the most part pruned and bare.
But my favorites, the Camillias, were doing their best to bloom!

Henry E. Huntington died in 1927 while Arabella had predeceased him by three years. Both are buried in the mausoleum on the property, designed by John Russell Pope, who later designed the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.

I remain eternally grateful for the Henry and Arabella Huntington’s philanthropic vision of a great art gallery, library and botanical garden which has given us The Huntington Library, Art Museum & Gardens, a great gift of beauty and peace to enjoy throughout the generations.

The California Science Museum - Family Fun While Learning!

As a birthday surprise, we took my science loving granddaughter M. to the California Science Center in Los Angeles California.  What I didn’t realize as we entered the museum was that I would be equally fascinated and intrigued by the fabulous exhibits housed there!

Picture
Picture
Picture
We bee-lined straight to the Endeavor Space-shuttle exhibit because we knew it would soon be crowded and we wanted to really take our time looking over the amazing exhibits. Endeavour, launched in 1992, successfully completed 25 missions into space, including the first service mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as the first mission to add a U.S. component to the International Space Station.

A few of the exhibits showed how life is lived on the shuttle and space station.  Of course we had to find out how they eat and go to the bathroom.  What kid (and adult) wouldn’t be intrigued with that info!  We viewed personal items used by the astronauts and even saw a re-creation of the computer laden control room that guided the shuttles.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
After checking out the space-life exhibits, we boarded the “flight simulator” for a pretend flight to the space station to make repairs.  The simulator rocks, rumbles and tilts in full simulation of the flight.  Pretty cool!

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture

Finally we entered the huge hangar room where the space shuttle Endeavor hangs from the ceiling.  It was impressive (Sperm Whale sized) and we took our time looking at the hundreds of tiny heat-shield tiles that protected the shuttle surface, the giant engines that propelled the shuttle and the American insignias that graced its sides.  Just looking at this amazing piece of American scientific engineering made me proud knowing what an accomplishment the space shuttle was for human-kind.

The Humans in Space Exhibit also contains some amazing early space capsules:

*Apollo-Soyuz Command Module that docked with a soviet space craft
*Gemini II Capsule flown in 1966
*Mercury Redstone2 Capsule which contained one of the first primates sent into space

Suitably awed, we ventured off to explore the rest of the science center.  Exploring ecosystems first, we stepped into the first of what are called the “zones”.  The “Forest Zone” was full of tanks displaying the riotous variety of sea plants and animals in a kelp forest.  Some pretty creepy animals like the eels and sea cucumbers live alongside beauties like jelly-fish, sea stars and coral.  Some of the most beautiful were also extremely strange looking!

You can even create an interactive tidal flow and watch the inhabitants of the tidal pool react!

Picture

A glass tunnel allowed us to feel like we were standing in the ocean with schools of fish reflecting against the light and small sharks gliding gracefully over our heads.

Hands-on exhibits allowed M. to explore making waves and investigating how hard it is for a sea creature inside an exoskeleton and animals like anemones to catch food.

Picture
Picture
And Yes one of the "zones" also taught us about Tree Ring Dating!  No Kelp Forest here!
Picture
We also had to e!xplore the “Rot Room” which I found disgusting, but all the kids loved it!  Exhibits of maggots, blow-flies, cock-roaches and rotting carcasses were fascinating for the young ones.  It was all about the cycle of life.

Picture
Picture
The “Extreme Zone” housed one of my favorites, showing the ecosystem of the Arctic zone. The displays which held clothing typical to arctic Native Americans, arctic ice, whale blubber, polar bear fur and penguin info all help kids understand how humans and animals survive in the cold arctic environment.

We also checked out the “desert zone” where they have an exhibit showing how flash floods work including a real rushing canyon flood every ten minutes!

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
The science exhibits where you investigate how the physical environment works were M’s favorites.  They are interactive exhibits, where you can learn about sound waves, wind, infrared heat, clouds, and lots of other amazingly interesting things.  We had a blast!  This museum is everything a science-loving granddaughter could want in a birthday outing.

Picture

The museum also offers an IMAX Theater with changing science related films.  Be sure to check out the permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions schedule before you go!   The California Science Center is a great family museum!

A Day at the Getty Center in Los Angeles

Picture
Where do you take your Science/Math loving granddaughter to convince her that the arts are beautiful and important?  The Getty Center in Los Angeles!  This was a particularly poignant visit for me, since I had worked at the Getty Center when it first opened in 1997, in both the Research Institute and Museum Education Department for five of the most amazing years of my career, and now I was returning to share the joys of fine art with my daughter and granddaughter.

I have to admit, the tram ride to the top of the of the mountain where the museum is perched in Santa Monica was a great opening for catching the interest of an eight year old.  Good start….. Now, how to keep that interest going!

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
As you walk out of the tram and onto the sparkling, almost blindingly pale, travertine plaza, the peace and calm of the museum campus flows over you, and it is indeed a campus, including a research institute and library, conservation center, museum curatorial offices, and of course the galleries.

All of these structures so spare and graceful, with flowing fountains and art pieces accenting the spaces between.  The stunning Getty Center was designed by the renowned architect Richard Meier.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
I alerted M. to the fact that if she looked very carefully, she would find fossils hidden on the rough marbled surface of the travertine stone.  During our visit, we found mostly leaf fossils, and a possible fish bone fossil, but it sure was fun to look for them!

Picture
Eating is always a great way to make sure that kids are fortified for a museum visit and we started our visit at the café, with a beautiful view of the Santa Monica mountains and valleys as they roll out toward the Pacific Ocean.

Even at the café, we found fun, since the conveyor belt that whisks away your tray was intriguing for a science-loving girl.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Stomachs full, we finally headed into the stunning galleries of the Getty Center.  The J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles houses European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs.

Fortunately, my granddaughter is so bright and inquisitive, that early on, she was pointing out details in the artworks and decorative arts, that I had never noticed before and she soaked up information about artists and art pieces.

We particularly enjoyed channeling our inner Princesses in rooms that literally came directly from palaces!

Naturally, M's attention span eventually reached its limit so we headed over to the “Family Room” where she could explore art in a fun kid-friendly environment.  I have to admit, I had fun wandering through its interactive exhibits too!

The museum provides Multi-Media Guides for families to explore the museum, Art Detective Cards, and a Mobile Gallery Game.  The Getty Center Family Events and Activities Website is a great place to plan your family visit!

The collection at the Getty is world-class and the paintings, decorative arts, photography and sculpture are a joy to explore.

When we had soaked up enough stunning art, and needed to get some fresh air, we headed out to the Central Garden. The garden lies at the heart of the Getty Center and overlooks a hedge-maze at its center.  This beautiful space was designed by artist Robert Irwin.  Another lovely garden to view is the cactus garden which projects outward from one of the museum galleries. Fun contemporary sculpture is placed throughout the museum campus grounds.

The Getty Center is one of the gems of Southern California and provides a family-friendly introduction to some of the great artworks of the world.  We had a great time and can’t wait to go back some day!   Is my granddaughter an art convert?  Well.....we'll see!

Home in the Foothills of L.A. - I have missed this beautiful place!

Taking a walk through my childhood neighborhood, Glendale, is a gift for my soul.

I have missed the fragrance of Jasmine, Eucalyptus, and the sharp smell of Citrus and Orange Blossoms; the bright geraniums, and birds of paradise and the delicate roses that grace the winter in southern California.

I have missed the grassy palms, some so tall and thin their round lollipop heads tower over the neighborhood.
I missed the scrubby rolling foothills so dry, sage and brown against the aqua-blue sky. A foothill neighborhood tucked in the vast sprawl of Los Angeles.
