After working in the Washington DC area for over twenty years my wife and I moved to Jonesborough TN to set up house for a couple of years while deciding on a place to live during our retirement. Well it has now been seven years and we’re still here. Jonesborough is the oldest town in Tennessee and it has all the quaintness to go with that distinction including the Main Street Café. The café is frequented by locals, who know how good the place is and by tourists because it is located smack in the middle of the old town. The interior of the café is very homey with a number of small tables nicely situated throughout the airy restaurant and a few booths located against one of the walls. In my opinion the best place to sit is at the table located at the window overlooking Main Street, especially if you’re a people watcher. Upon entering the café you order and pay for your meal at the counter just inside the door. Menus are on the counter and the old fashioned black boards behind the counter always have a number of additional specials listed. The menu includes a number of salads to choose from including Orzo Pasta, Italian, Artisan Vegetarian, Garden Pasta, Tortellini Pasta, Mozzarella & Basil Caprese, Mediterranean Penne Pasta, Tuna, Chicken and the list goes on. If you think the salad selection is diverse you should see the rest of the menu which includes some phenomenal sandwiches and a variety of hot dishes. My two favorite dishes are the Mediterranean Tuna Salad sandwich and their extraordinary Club sandwich with either the Greek Bow Tie Pasta Salad or the Dill potato salad as a side dish. The Café also offers a few different beers from the Depot Street Brewing Company which is also located in Jonesborough. My favorite is the Loose Caboose which is a very good beer and I’ve drank enough beers to know when a beer is a good one.
If you find yourself in the oldest town in Tennessee you definitely have to stop the Main Street Café. But you better be here before 3:00PM because it does close early.
